Event Associate (Part-time)

Saint Louis, Missouri

Venture Café St. Louis is a nonprofit organization with a mission to connect innovators to make things happen. We broaden the application of innovation to include a wide range of industries and communities, build a more diverse and inclusive innovation economy, and connect innovation communities locally, nationally and internationally.

The latest program of Venture Café St. Louis is Innovation Hall. The first of its kind in the region (based on our sister organization’s District Hall in Boston), Innovation Hall offers free drop-in workspace for entrepreneurs in the region and the largest event space in the Cortex area, plus an on-site restaurant and coffee bar.

Innovation Hall is looking for part-time event staff to help support the events team. The schedule is part-time and flexible based on your availability and our event volume. General hours are after 5 PM on weekdays and anytime on weekends, roughly 5-10 hours per week. Shifts will be scheduled for two or more weeks in advance. The compensation is $15 per hour.

ABOUT INNOVATION HALL EVENTS: 

Events play a critical role in our community by providing entrepreneurs, innovators, and others with an outlet to collaborate and network with peers.  The various events provide skills, knowledge, and resources and include programming meetups, pitching exercises, non-profit fundraisers, panel discussions, sector-specific collaborations, and hackathons, among other private events. Every month, Innovation Hall hosts 50+ events in our pod, lounge, and assembly spaces.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Overall, we like to employ service-minded people who are reliable, clever, and able to work independently. It’s not expected that you’ll know everything that we do on day one. What’s important is that you are a bright person, interested in what we’re doing, and willing to learn. More specifically, we are looking for someone who possesses the following characteristics:

  • Personable and naturally enjoys helping others
  • Relative job experience in hospitality
  • Detail-oriented and organized with solid time management skills
  • Enjoys working on their feet and being on the move
  • Independent, trustworthy, and willing to learn
  • Able to keep calm in stressful situations
  • Comfort with AV troubleshooting

RESPONSIBILITIES

This person will join our Events teams to help facilitate more than 50+ events every month. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Rearranging furniture and setting up/breaking down spaces before and after each event
  • Maintaining and organizing event spaces; making sure the whiteboards are cleaned before and after each event, making sure the pods are stocked with our standard adapters, cables, and other necessities.
  • Inventorying event furniture and equipment
  • Cleaning up after the event (for example, wrapping up cords, recycling leftover printed materials, wiping down surfaces, etc)
  • Keeping an eye on the timing of the event to ensure the event starts/ends on time
  • Receiving furniture rental deliveries and breaking down furniture rentals at the end of the event to prepare for pickup
  • Being aware of misconduct and misuse of the space and/or Innovation Hall materials
  • Being present in or adjacent to the event space during the event to quickly help troubleshoot or assist the client with any other event needs
  • Strong communication with Event team members about issues before, during, or after the event
  • Conducting other administrative or research projects as requested by during the actual event time

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will demonstrate these traits:

  • Ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects (please note that this job requires walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and reaching)
  • Ability to work on Saturdays and Sundays, and Weekday evenings

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

  • Ideal Start: Early-mid November
  • Time Commitment: 5-10 hours a week (Required evening and weekend availability)
  • Compensation: $15/hr based on experience [3-hour minimum per shift]
